In Memoriam: Dean Collins, 1953-2005

Dean Collins passed away quietly at his home on the evening of February 2, 2005. He was a mentor, educator and friend to many of us in the photographic industry. He earned his Masters degree from the Professional Photographers of America at age 26, and holds an honorary degree from Brooks Institute of Photography. Dean is known in the industry for his pioneering work in understanding the mechanics of light, and how that translates to both film and digital photography. Over the years, his lectures, videos and publications have developed terminology that has become the standard for photographers everywhere.

There will be a memorial service for Dean next week, and we will update this post with that information when we receive it.

We have created this weblog to allow his many friends to post their favorite remembrances, or to share their words of condolence with others.
